SAY WHEN

between stimulus and response

Having been one of the winners of the Chrysalis Bursary from Pontardawe Arts Centre, we started developing what, at the time, we called Fat Club. During the initial investigation of the idea we worked with Holly Stoppit, Llinos Mai and we were mentored by Louise Osborn. We also started a ‘FAT CLUBS’ at Pontardawe Arts Centre, where all things food were discussed. The debate and talks were always interesting and stimulating and provided ideas for the production and what will surround the project. In June 2016 we presented a show back at Pontardawe. The response was very good and encouraged us to take it further.
We applied for and received a development grant from the ACW to take the show into production. We will be inviting audiences and industry professionals tom see the showings – 9th, 10th and 11th of October 2017 – Pontardawe Arts Centre and 12th and 13th of October 2017 at Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff.
The Team: Robert Bowman (creator, director and actor), Adam Karrie (co-creator and actor), Elen Bowman (associate director and producer), Louise Osborn (dramaturge), Paul Whittaker (vid specialist and additional script writer), Ace McCarron (lighting designer), Sam Jones (composer/sound designer) and Deryn Tudor (set and costume designer)
The show is essentially devised using Meisner’s repetition exercises as a starting point and from there script is written. The idea originates from Robbie’s struggles with the yo-yoing of weight loss and gain and his coming across a book entitled Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor E Frankl. The play is a kind of Waiting for Godot meets Weight Watchers. The story unfolds through the relationship that develops between the actor and the stage manager.  A darkly, poignant look at the male perspective on weight loss.
We will continue the ‘Fat Clubs’ at each venue where we will talk about our research, find out peoples’ stories around food, how much do people know about are food consumption and the environment and ‘try out’ some exercises we are developing to help with weight loss and weight control.  If you are interested in taking part we’d love to hear from you. Please contact us on livingpictures@btopenworld.com
