Book Club is a new group which will meet to gain a genuine understanding of directing texts in an unpressurised rehearsal room environment. If you struggle to understand dense texts about directing or want a space to explore them without the pressure of production, don’t worry, you are not alone.

Book Club will be a gaggle of people who have worked as a director or in an associate or assistant role and can demonstrate a commitment to professional theatre directing, whether that be as a theatre maker or creative.

The sessions will be peer-led and held within a safe, supportive environment, they will be designed to test the ideas of a book rather than your own practice; enabling everyone to gain the confidence to lead a session whilst all collectively exploring the approach within the text.

Each Director prepares an agreed section of the book and leads a practical session exploring it with the group.

This is a regional pilot – we will explore one text to begin with. Following that The Director’s Book Club will collectively decide on texts they wish to explore in the future.

Book Club format: 5 evening sessions (it’s very important that you make every effort to commit to all of the sessions before applying, however we appreciate that freelance life is busy – so we ask that if something comes up and you can’t make a session that you give us ample notice).

The text: Viewpoints – A Practical Guide to Viewpoints and Composition by ANNE BOGART and TINA LANDAU.

Venue: Book Club sessions will take place at:

Tuesday 3rd March 2020 – Nottingham Playhouse
Tuesday 10th March 2020 – Derby Theatre, Community Hub
